About University of Massachusetts Amherst

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, also known as UMass Amherst or simply UMass, is a public research and land-grant university in Amherst, which is a town in Hampshire County, in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population of nearly 35 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census. Amherst is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area, the communities of Amherst Center, South Amherst and North Amherst, being census-designated places.

UMass was initially named Massachusetts Agricultural College, and was founded in 1863, under the provisions of the Federal Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act, in order to provide education to Massachusetts citizens in the `agricultural, mechanical, and military arts`. With an enrollment of more than 26 000 students and having more than 1 370 faculty members, UMass is today the largest public university in New England, offering its students bachelor’s, doctoral and master’s degrees in more than 90 undergraduate and 65 graduate fields of study, being academically organized into 9 schools and colleges.

The athletic teams from UMass Amherst are known as the UMass Minutemen, who compete in the NCAA, the university being a member of the Atlantic Ten Conference, including in the Hockey East Association, for hockey and in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), for football. The Minutemen consider as their biggest rivals the University of New Hampshire, Boston College and the University of Connecticut. Among the sports in which they compete there are: baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and tennis.

UMass has more than 220 000 alumni, living worldwide, including Grammy, Emmy, and Academy Award winners, as well as Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners. Among other resonant names on the list of notable alumni, there are: Jeffrey W. Mantz - Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at George Mason University, William Monahan – screenwriter, `The Departed`, Mark Wilding - lead writer and executive producer of `Grey’s Anatomy`, Peter Laird - co-creator Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jeff Taylor - founder of Monster.com, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after attending UMass.
